Introducing The Spotlight Challenge

One secret challenge. Any genre. Any camera. Solo or with a team. Spotlight Drive is building a filmmaking event around one goal: finish the movie.

Most movies do not die on set. They disappear into group chats, unfinished scripts, and plans to make something “someday.” The Spotlight Challenge is being built to change that.

Spotlight Drive is developing a Fall 2026 filmmaking event around one simple idea: give filmmakers a starting point, a real deadline, and a reason to finish.

Every film begins with one secret, open-ended creative challenge. What happens after that is up to the filmmaker. Horror, comedy, drama, documentary, or something that does not fit neatly into a category—all are welcome. Use a cinema camera, use a phone, build a team, or make it alone.

The goal is not to make everyone create the same movie. It is to see how many completely different films can begin with the same kind of creative spark.

Disclosure: Spotlight News and The Spotlight Challenge are both operated by Spotlight Drive. This is an official first-party announcement.

The challenge is simple

Receive one secret creative challenge. Write the film. Shoot it. Edit it. Finish it. Then put the work—and the people who made it—in the Spotlight.

How the event is designed to work

When registration opens, each film entry is planned to receive its own Entry ID, private participant link, deadline, and secret challenge. The assignment is locked to the entry, which means there are no rerolls.

The current format calls for a 4–20 minute finished film. Any genre and any camera are allowed. Phones are welcome. Filmmakers may enter solo or with a team of any size, and the planned fee is $29 per film—not per person.

Each film must be created after its challenge is assigned. The filmmaker controls the story, cast, crew, style, equipment, and interpretation.

Finishing should lead somewhere

The Spotlight Challenge is being designed around completed work, not just sign-ups. Spotlight Drive is planning an online premiere experience, a permanent film-and-credits page, a public Spotted Rating, private constructive feedback, and recognition for completed eligible films.

Those features remain subject to the final rules and product readiness, but the direction is clear: the film should not disappear after submission. The work should have a place to be seen, and every credited person should remain connected to what they helped create.

Your film remains yours

Filmmakers retain ownership of their work. The final rules will describe the limited permissions Spotlight Drive needs to receive, judge, screen, showcase, archive, and promote Challenge entries.

Entrants will be responsible for safe production practices and the necessary permissions for performers, locations, music, artwork, third-party material, and any material generative-AI use.

What happens next

Registration is not open yet. Spotlight Drive is completing the final rules, participant materials, payment workflow, and entry operations before accepting paid registrations.

Until then, filmmakers can start thinking about the people they would call, the equipment they already have, and the kind of film they have been waiting for a reason to make.

The movie can stay in the group chat—or it can become real.
