Deadline update — October 3
The limited October 2 extension has closed. Film Independent's standard film and Digital Creator deadline ended September 29, and the later window was restricted to specified member groups and active Film Independent Fellows.
Submissions for the 2027 Film Independent Spirit Awards are now scheduled to be closed. Film Independent plans to announce nominations on December 2, 2026.

Why it matters
The word “extended” did not mean a general public reopening. Keeping that distinction visible after the deadline prevents filmmakers from mistaking an expired, limited-access window for an active opportunity.
What closed on October 2
The extension covered eligible feature-film and Digital Creator submissions from current Arts Circle, Filmmaker Pro, and Secret members, plus active Film Independent Fellows. The general deadline was September 29. The television extension ended September 18.
Short films are not accepted for the Spirit Awards, and submitted films must be at least 70 minutes long. Entry does not guarantee eligibility or nomination.
Rules that continue to matter
Film Independent lists a $30 million budget ceiling for feature films after tax incentives and a $1 million ceiling for John Cassavetes Award qualification. A qualifying festival screening can create a route to eligibility, but an ordinary festival screening does not automatically count as a commercial theatrical run.
The 2027 cycle also adds Best International First Feature, the Robert Redford Environmental Vision Award, and a Digital Creator Award. The official rules—not the category names alone—control eligibility.
What submitters should keep
- The completed entry and payment confirmation.
- Documentation supporting budget and exhibition eligibility.
- Accurate contact details for the submitting team.
- A calendar reminder for the December 2 nominations announcement.
