What Is a Casting Breakdown?

Original guide

A casting breakdown is a structured notice describing a production and the roles it needs to cast. It commonly includes character information, dates, location, compensation, union status when relevant, requested materials, and submission instructions.

Why this matters

A clear breakdown helps performers decide whether an opportunity is relevant and gives casting a consistent way to request useful submissions. It also creates a record of important practical and safety information.

How it works in practice

The production identifies genuine story requirements, separates them from flexible preferences, and discloses material conditions such as travel, stunts, intimacy, nudity, or unusual working environments. Distribution may be public, restricted, or sent through professional platforms.

Beginner example

A short film posts its logline, shoot city, dates, pay, role descriptions, content notes, and a deadline for headshot, résumé, and reel links. That posting is a casting breakdown.

Common misconception

A breakdown is not a contract or proof that a production is legitimate. Performers should verify the source, and producers should avoid discriminatory preferences unrelated to lawful, genuine role needs.

Read the breakdown in three passes

  1. The role: identify the character, playing range, requested skills, and material conditions.
  2. The work: check dates, location, compensation, travel, and any stated union or agreement information.
  3. The submission: check the contact, deadline and time zone, requested files, link permissions, and next stage.

Playing age describes a role's apparent age; it is not automatically a request to disclose your birth date. Treat requested professional information and sensitive identity information as separate matters.

When information is missing

If a notice says “paid” without an amount, ask about compensation before making a commitment. If dates are tentative, clarify what availability is being requested. If a copied notice omits the original contact or submission method, verify the source before sending materials.

Is a casting breakdown the same as a script breakdown?

No. A script breakdown identifies production needs scene by scene. A casting breakdown communicates roles and the submission process.

Actors can use the casting-calls guide and Audition Tracker. Filmmakers can start with the Casting Call Template and short-film casting guide.
