Applications for the AFI Conservatory's Fall 2027 class are open for six disciplines: Directing, Cinematography, Producing, Editing, Production Design, and Screenwriting.
The deadline is December 1, 2026, at 8:59 p.m. Pacific Time, or 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. AFI says every required item—including recommendations, transcripts, and applicable English-language test scores—must be received by the deadline for an application to be complete.

Why it matters
A film-school application is a production schedule of its own. Portfolio pieces, transcripts, recommendations, and test scores often move on different timelines. AFI's completeness rule means pressing submit is not enough if a third-party document is still missing when the deadline arrives.
The practical deadline
Applicants should work backward from December 1 and set earlier personal deadlines for recommendation requests, transcript orders, portfolio exports, and link testing. Waiting until the final day leaves little room to replace a broken video link or chase an outstanding document.
AFI's published requirements vary by discipline. Applicants should use the current checklist for the program they are applying to rather than relying on a prior year's portfolio or a general film-school template.
One detail screenwriters should notice
The 2027 screenwriting requirements state that applicants must disclose any use of large-language-model artificial-intelligence technology in their screenplay materials. The disclosure should appear as a footnote explaining how the tool was used. AFI says failure to disclose may disqualify an applicant or lead to early dismissal after enrollment.
That requirement applies to the screenwriting materials described on AFI's admissions page. Applicants in every discipline should still review their own current rules for any portfolio-specific restrictions.
What happens after submission
AFI says completed applications are reviewed for possible Zoom interviews. Final admissions decisions are scheduled to be communicated by email on March 15, 2027.
